The Need for Speed

While reviewing Editing and Proofreading tools and tips today it occurred to me how useful these tools and tips are to reading the bible. I hear a lot of people focus on how fast they can read the bible in a year or how many times they can read it all the way through. Why the need for speed?

Through the Holy Spirit, the Word is limitless, endless, fathomless  – there is no way one reading or speed-reading it will change you in the inner most places as was planned and divinely designed by God.  The Bible was designed to progressively reveal truth, to teach us on each step of maturity we are standing on, to light the path with truth (wherever on the path we happen to be at the moment), to provide constant assurance of victory for every battle that will come our way. Take a breath, slow down, seek Holy Spirit to bring revelation, and enjoy the ride.

  • Proofreading Tip: “Slow Down and Read it Out Loud”

“Average reading speed: 300-500 WPM / Average speaking speed: 80-120 WPM”

“When we read fast, we: 1) Read “shells” of words-first and last few letters. 2) Subconsciously fix mistakes.”

When we take time to slow down and read out loud we ear each word = Faith comes by hearing the word of God. Also, when we slow down we won’t miss nuances in word usage. Why was it written using that phrase or using a different word? Investigating the text brings me to the next Proofreading Tool/Tip.

  • “Use Three Senses (Read out loud, touch each word as you read it)”
  • “Reading = being involved with meaning and flow”

“What one sense misses, the others may pick up: 1) Sight. 2) Hearing. 3) Touch”

The bible can really come alive when you look past the text to the actual events and people. What would that have looked like? What would that have sounded like? What would it have been like to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment and be healed? What connects with what, what is really the meaning? There is always more there in the text – investigate and dig deeper into meanings.

Just two tips, but I hope they make your bible reading time  more of an adventure. 🙂
