Day 6 – Luke 5:1-11

Simon Catching Fish

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%205:1-11&version=KJV

This scripture is about Jesus calling Simon, James, and John to be disciples/fishers of men.  Jesus gets in the boat with Simon, telling him to cast out the net, and haul in an abundance of fish.

But I love how it starts: “as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God” – I would love to see this happening.  To see Jesus teaching and people listening. I imagine what it must have been like, but I doubt I do it justice. I wish I could travel back to those moments and see them.

A fun fact: the lake of “Gennesaret” has one meaning of: Harp (the kind that David played).

In v.5 Simon recognizes Jesus’ authority when he calls him Master (G1988 – which is an overseer or master), – Simon was saying he recognized Jesus had authority as a Master or Overseer.

But after Simon pulled in the fish, witnessing the miracle, he recognizes Jesus’ Holiness – “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”  Lord means Simon was calling Jesus his Lord, his Master. Giving Jesus that place in his life.

v. 11 “And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.”  Kinda sums it up – what an encounter with Jesus is like.

This is the heart of a true disciple. Elisha left all to follow Elijah and received a double portion, these 12 left all to follow Jesus and changed their world…what will be said of us – IF we drop it all to follow Jesus?

It’s something only discovered by forsaking it all to follow Him.
