So, to recap: In the first Food post I started with the heart of the matter, which is our heart, on gluttony/food addiction/overeating… “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21.
“Live What We Love” is challenge, but a worthy one! Are you taking the challenge?
I think looking at gluttony/food addiction through the Word is a matter of God’s Wisdom vs. human wisdom. As is normal with God, it comes across way to simple, but proves out to be a lot harder than it looks. For what He is asking of us is a constant, daily choice, to die to self and a constant deliberate turning our heart toward Jesus. It’s not a quick-fix plan, it’s not a diet pill, and it’s not a prepackaged chemically injected alternative food option. Diet options don’t work because we haven’t actually changed our thinking or our heart about Food. No, from what I see in these scriptures, it is a matter of losing weight by losing flesh.
“And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.” Luke 12:29-31
In eating, we (I know I’m guilty) eat to fill everything but our stomachs! We eat to fill a void, fill a need, fill a craving, or emotional eating…but Jesus; He wants to fill all those places with an eternally satisfying relationship with Him. Instead of turning to the cookie jar, or the chip bag, He is asking that we turn to Him. When the snacks are calling you, call on Jesus through bible study, prayer time, going for a walk and talking with the Lord. Ask Him where the root of overeating is inside you. There is a root, dig it out with the Lord, and find out what void you’re trying to fill and then ask Him to fill it.
“2And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3Give us day by day our daily bread. 4And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Luke 11:2-4 (KJV)
For me, I’ve noticed that watching TV is when I want to eat/snack. Whether I’m hungry doesn’t seem to matter at that point. So, what I am praying to do – and I invite you to ask me (via comments) how I am doing for accountability – is shut the TV off when I am pulled to the kitchen to snack/eat. It seems overeating and watching TV is connected somehow, and it’s time to break that cycle!
Something to do to turn your attention from food to the Lord is to study out all these scriptures that I’m including. Ponder them, think on them as they relate to how you eat or how you think about eating, write them on cards to keep before your eyes, look up the words in a dictionary or Hebrew/Greek Concordance – study it out and let His Word renew your thinking on food.

Stay tuned…more to come!
