1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.[c]
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see what the LORD has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields[d] with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Sometimes, everything seems to fall apart. What do we do when we don’t know what to do?
“Be still and know that I am God” is the answer, the direction, a vital next step…
A psalm of David.
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
We all know what it’s like to try to talk to someone through noise. A loud room is frustrating when trying to actually talk with someone. God is always speaking to us, but He isn’t going to yell at us over the noise all our lives. He would like for us to hear Him – that still small voice speaks in the stillness we would welcome and relax in. He wants to tell us what we need to know, He wants to direct us along the right paths, and He wants to be close to us.
How amazing He is to love us so completely. How greatly we do not deserve Him and His kind affection for us, yet He love us fully and completely.
When the world falls apart He is there. When we are on the mountaintop He is there. If we want to take the time to find Him, let’s look and behold who He really is. How we see Him will directly affect how we relate to Him.
What is it to: “know that I am God”?
It’s to know who God is and always will be: Questions: How has God shown Himself to you? What would be one word or verse that represents that? For me, it’s Trailblazer! Psalm 77:19 “Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.” He loves to make a way where there is no way!
God is: (Just to name a few searches you can do to Find God)
It’s to be encouraged by who He is:
2 Sam.22:37, Rm.15:4, Ps.136:2, Ps. 91
God is Love – this is the Foundational Truth. What He does, and all the other parts of His character flows from this River. He is Abundant in what He does, He is Complete – there is nothing lacking in our God. He doesn’t have emotional wounds and come with baggage like we do. He isn’t weighed down with regrets or doubts. He is whole and wants to make us whole. He is Strong – the mighty earthly strong men that move buses and boulders have nothing on God. He moves mountains and the hearts of men. God is our Deliverance – He sings songs of deliverance over us every minute of every day, and has already given us the victory.
It’s to be assured of victory:
Ps. 44:5-7, 1 Cor. 15:57, Ps. 118:15, 1 John 5:4, Deut. 20:4,
When God be for us, who can be against us? My G-Mama used to say: “Circumstances alter cases”, but with God there is no circumstance that will alter His case, His character, His plan, His way. He is stronger than the circumstance, His is Greater, He is Holy and His way is perfect. He is Trustworthy! Trustworthy is part of who He is and it cannot be separated from who He is. Victorious is who He is! He has already won the ultimate battle, the little battles we have in life aren’t comparable to that, are they? And yet He wins those for us as well.
It’s to be comforted in safety and assurances of His promises: Not everything that looks wrong is wrong! Perception is a tricky thing and can’t be considered a trusted source. What God promises is a trusted source. What God’s word shows us about bleak situations is a great source of hope in how God operates – because He’s the same today as He was then and will be the same 50 yrs from now through eternity. Sometimes He’s calling us to rise to a new life in Him when we just suffered loss. Sometimes the new land we are given to take scares us and we are tempted to believe the bad report our perception is giving us. Sometimes circumstances seem more powerful than God – like in Ps. 46 – the mountains falling into the sea, wars, it’s all scary. We lose a job, we lose a family member…whatever the loss – it can seem greater than God. Faulty perception turns the scales and will always tell us that God isn’t so great and isn’t there, but getting back to the Word will tip the scales back in the right direction. God is God over all things, and there is nothing He can’t do.
This is not nearly all the HOPE that is available to us, but just a small taste to encourage you. Jesus is all the Hope we need. The Words we receive, the dreams, it’s all good, but let’s keep our eyes on the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Let’s not base our happiness on circumstances or results – let’s receive our happiness and joy from Jesus where we will never be let down no matter the circumstance.
