Ephesians 6: The Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
Warfare has been a topic of study for me since I first started studying scripture. When it came to the Armor of God I always thought it was something to pray-on-when-needed, but this morning when I was praying to apply the helmet of salvation the Holy Spirit grabbed my attention with: “Just what is the Helmet of Salvation?” and my thoughts started swirling. And so, I was on a treasure hunt to find the nuggets of truth. Here are the facts I dug up:
According to Webster’s:
Helmet is: a covering or enclosure, protective head covering, made of material to resist impact.
Salvation is: to save, deliverance from the power & effects of sin, the agent or means that effects salvation, the realization of the supremacy of infinite Mind overall bringing with it the destruction of the illusion of sin, sickness, and death, liberation from ignorance or illusion, preservation from destruction or failure, deliverance from danger or difficulty.
2 Samuel 22:47
“The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock! May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted!”
11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,
With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
[ A psalm of David. ] The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?
But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The Lord is great!”
What is it to be “clothed” in Salvation, or anything else the bible says we are to be clothed in? I think to be clothed in something is to know something so deeply that it belongs to us as part of our identity.
What is Salvation? Being saved from death in hell to have Eternal Life! Saved from the debt of our sin, deliverance from trouble, liberated from, given victory, safe, rescued, defended, and spiritual sense. When we are saved, we know it right? We know we accepted Jesus as our Savior. Most can recall the exact instant. We don’t need reminding of that, so why do we need reminding that He will deliver us, or rescue us, or give us spiritual sense, or liberate us from the chains that bind us? Why do we go into situations wondering: “Will God help me this time?”
So what I am thinking is: if we renew our minds (get these truths in our knowers) to the all-encompassing truth of Salvation we won’t ever be without the helmet, or any of the other Armor of God we are to be wearing.
Salvation definitions had a lot to do with: the mind, illusion, realizations, and ignorance.
We need realization to free us from illusions, and look what is noted to be illusions: sin, sickness, and death!! It really amazes me how much of the enemies efforts are tricks – slight of hand, smoke and mirrors, parlor games. Why? Because what we believe to be true effects our decisions, our actions can be swayed by a false perception, and we can overreact at the slightest lie whispered in our mind. The enemy gets his way in us by using his “rudder” of false perception and perspective.
Salvation is past tense!! Already done!! Salvation delivers us from the power and effects of sin – the power of sin is satan, and the effects of sin are heartbreaking and numerous, but God provided a way for us to walk in victory. I don’t believe it’s intended to be a pray-it-on when needed provision, but a thorough, consistent, and eternal provision through Christ. We are told to “cloth ourselves” – not “put it on when needed” or “where when appropriate” or “no helmet, no shoes, no sword, no service”. I don’t believe God would withhold protection from us just because we didn’t pray-on His armor. I don’t believe His protection is that flimsy that it would rely on us, but He does tell us to meditate day and night on His Word. His Word solidified in our minds and hearts is the Key.
Realization of the truth sets us free from ignorance. When truth hits us we see clearly, there is life in revealed truth, but with ignorance – “my people die for lack of knowledge”. The more truth we know in our knower the harder it is for the enemy to steer us with his false illusions. When we wear the truth we will walk through each day knowing in our knower that we are saved, delivered, liberated from the chains that try to bind us, victorious, and safe because God’s Hand is on us, rescued by God’s hand, defended by His hand, and given spiritual sense by Holy Spirit. They are truths just hanging in our closet until we know them and believe them.
The Rock of our Salvation is sure and unmoving as is His Word to us. These truths are not fair weather friends. They are unmoving just as the God who gave them. I do not mean we shouldn’t pray scripture, it’s awesome to pray scripture, but the bible clearly speaks about wearing the truth/walking it in.
Ephesians: put on the new self, put on the full armor of God
Romans: put on the armor of light
Proverbs and Job: walking in and putting on Righteousness
Our clothes say something about us as we walk in them. Check out what the bible says about what we are to walk in, what we are to clothe ourselves with, and to put on. We need the Godly wardrobe available to us.
