As we go into the new year of 2011, a year that speaks of the prophetic, God gave a warning: “Beware of the Fowler’s Snare”. This does not say to be afraid of the fowler’s snare; it says we are to be aware of the Fowler’s snare. Awareness is wisdom which is from God; fear is of the devil and has no place in our life as a believer in Christ. With that said, let’s check out the Fowler’s Snare.
Last week I noticed what I believe to be a Red Tail Hawk. It was sitting in different places, but would soar past my front window and sat perched at one point down near the road. It’s an enormous bird and while thinking about it Holy Spirit pointed out that they are Seers, they have incredible sight.
A month or so ago I had a dream. In this dream I was fighting with someone using Samurai swords in the air, like that movie a few years ago with the special effects that made it look like they were doing everything in mid-air. It wasn’t until I landed that the enemy got a hold of me. He had a sonogram of two babies in my belly as if I were pregnant. I saw the sonogram of the two babies. I was being held from behind. He pierced my belly to kill one of the babies, I heard the baby scream and I heard myself scream as I woke up. I could feel life inside me even as I sat in bed – so amazing.
(Flying, being up in the air/up high, mountain tops, etc… can represent the Prophetic in dream language. This dream also had air warfare, which speaks to the warning God is giving. I think it wise to note also that the enemy had the sonogram – he knows our gifting, and he knows where to get a hold of it. Again, me saying this is not to cause fear, it is to make you aware and prepared.)
A couple of years ago I had a dream. In this dream I was in a familiar office I worked in before, but I was newly hired. I went to the back room but was called back to the front room for a phone call. I was shocked someone would be calling me since I had just started. The man on the phone said to stay in the job, but he spoke of another job coming and the numbers 70 and 72.
(I didn’t know it until now, but dream interpretation can be progressive. I knew right away that this dream was direction on taking a new job at the time, but now years later it comes up again to settle the matter of understanding the numbers and the new “job” to come. The meaning may take time to unfold, and never underestimate the levels of meanings a dream can have. Just as the bible is endlessly alive with new revelation – the same Creator writes the dreams and can hide layers of meanings in them as well. Very exciting!)
(Is. 40:31) So what do we have here? All signs point to the Prophetic going into this New Year, and those that are going to soar this year should be aware of the enemy’s tactics. Soaring/using our gifts is not something the enemy wants any of God’s children to do. He would rather we be grounded and caged, which will be his primary goal as we take to flight. (get active for God)
“Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.” As I read Isaiah 40:31 and psalm 91 again through this lens I can see it fit together. It seems to me there are two places referred too – in the air and on the ground. For those who soar and those who walk. There isn’t any place He won’t be a refuge for us. The first part of the chapter speaks of The Most High, feathers, & wings. The second part speaks of ground level dangers, and our tents (bodies or homes). Pretty awesome!
What’s a Fowler –
My Nelson’s Compact Series Bible Dictionary says that “ancient fowlers used all kinds of implements and devices such as: decoys, traps, nets, bait, bows & arrows, slings, lures, setting dogs, and bird lime smeared on branches to catch their prey. Wicked scheming enemies of the righteous are called fowlers.”
Webster’s Dictionary definitions:
Decoy – a living or artificial animal used to entice game. A means used to mislead or lead into danger.
Misleading us is nothing new in our knowledge of the enemy, but in reference to the prophetic/seer how can we be mislead, and how can we avoid it? What are things that can bring us down to the ground? Maybe pride or self, tapping into those two weaknesses can redirect us onto dangerous ground. Pride can make us run ahead of God timing and out of His will, we can feel overly confident dealing with the enemy which could be hazardous, we can take the gift into fleshly hands made of clay and try to walk prophetically apart from God (like the prodigal son getting all he wanted from his father then taking off.)
Traps – device for catching & holding animals. Any stratagem for betraying, tricking, or exposing an unsuspecting person. The Human Mouth!
Betrayal, tricking – to me speak of the enemies smoke and mirror tactics, showing a wrong perception to prompt a wrong response. I think in this case too, humans can be used to betray us and trick us. We can really hurt each other. I hear people in ministry talk about how they felt betrayed and hurt by those who they felt were family or friends. This can bring us down if we let it, if we dwell there, and allow it to hold us back from going forward with God. We are trapped when we come into agreement with fear, rejection, worry, perception lies of the enemy… Boy how easily these things can keep us down and out of the prophetic – we are dealing in dreams, visions, words of knowledge – these aren’t concrete things that all people understand. We can easily get rejected, or discouraged by people, but we can’t stay there. We can’t take it to heart and lose our focus on God.
Nets – an openwork meshed fabric, act as a barrier, strung between to posts to divide in half.
Nets are not always easy to see before you are caught in them. They can blend in with the surroundings. I could see how this would be people who blend with us, but are actually dividers. A wolf in sheep’s clothing perhaps? How do we recognize one? Questions to ask ourselves: Is the person speaking life or death? Are they encouraging or discouraging? Are they pulling me away from the flock? Are they criticizing others to you? Are they starting feuds or disagreements? Are they planting negative thinking in your mind or doubts about other people of God or God himself?
There are demonic networks in operation. I don’t have the skinny on this – maybe one of you do?
Bait – food or other lure, entice, to set dogs upon, to torment especially with criticism or ridicule, to tease
All these things deal with the flesh. Are we more eager to satisfy the flesh or stick to God’s will – when Jesus was tempted one of the temptations was food, would He turn his back on God’s will to feed His stomach and stop the discomfort he must have been feeling. Jesus was tempted with greatness, possessions, title… all things we are faced with too. Will we forfeit our calling for a title, or to be great among men? Will we stay grounded in our fleshly desires or move up and out into a great unknown with God? Will we use our gifts to please men or to please God? Will we take credit for the signs and wonders because it feels so good to our flesh, or will we give all glory and honor to God no matter the cost? Tactics of the enemy – to put us in these positions hoping our flesh will win.
Bows & Arrows – a weapon, something that has a directional symbol
Actual weapons – Isaiah 54:17 “no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the LORD.” Directionally – when flying there is a gage that shows you the horizon, keeps you directionally functional! 🙂 You have to know which way is up or you will crash quickly. Satan would love to throw us off course, to confuse us so that we don’t know which way is up. I’ve experienced such heartache and confusion that I wasn’t sure what was what. We can reach that place of confusion and not know where we are or how to get to God. Staying in the Word and close to The Word will keep us aligned with the horizon to know where we are and where God is.
Slings – weapon to hurl a stone.
Another actual weapon. A stone – Jesus is the Chief Cornerstone. He is our Rock. The stone was rolled away revealing an empty tomb which assures us of our Victory!!
Maybe when we feel unsure if Jesus is there, that God has left us – when we are getting battered and wonder where God is, where is our Rock when we feel like we’re getting beaten against a rock? Satan likes to tell us that God is not there, that He’s left us, and that He’s not happy with us. All those whispered doubt s and the question “why?” When we are asking “Why did God allow this?” we are not trusting in His character, we are not believing in Him; the question is really the agreement with the lie.
Isaiah 28:16 “So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.”
“‘Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the LORD your God.”
Being tempted to let something/someone become greater than God in our minds and hearts will harm us. We must keep God first. We must tear down whatever has set itself up against God in our lives.
Lures – something that tempts or attracts with the promise of pleasure or reward.
Again this deals with the flesh. Randy Carlson uses a term “Hyperbolic Discounting” that could apply here – we tend to value the here and now more than the future. Simply put, if offered 5 dollars today or 500 say 2 years later, most would take the 5 dollars. They discount the value if there is a wait for the reward. The promise of fame now or a rich reward in heaven? Doing God’s will sometimes means we don’t get what our will wants – are we willing to give up a pleasure or reward now for something better later?
Setting the dogs –
Ok, so this is where someone unleashes their dogs with the dogs ready to catch/kill a certain animal. The only thing I came up with was that Satan unleashes his minions to wreak havoc in our lives. Remembering, they do not have free reign in our lives, but they may try to mess with us. Dogs are nosy – they stick their nose in what we’re doing, follow us, stay close. That’s cute with a dog, but with the enemy not so much!
Bird Lime – a sticky substance that is smeared on branches or twigs to capture small birds.
Catching our feet – might as well clip our wings if we can’t walk out God’s will. What’s keeping us stuck – fears, doubts, emotional baggage, etc.. stuck in unforgiveness, anger, resentments. Stuck in patterns of behavior, and addictions. The expression “I can’t get past this” – what is it we can’t get past? God will get us over it, around it, by it… free from it!!! 🙂
So, after all that a word of encouragement – John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed”! Whatever we are bound by, or stuck with, Jesus will free us! We are not in the enemy’s control. God is still on the Throne and in control of our lives. As we step out this year to soar (use our gifts) with Him let’s be wise to take His advice and be aware of what is going on around us. Not focusing on the enemy, but not being blind to his tactics either. This list is not nearly all-inclusive; please let me know if you have anything to add. There is so much more of God available to us if we will all share what He has taught us!
