O Christmas Tree

The tree is the center attraction, Christmas central, in most homes. The boughs are hung by the chimney with care, candles, snowmen, santa’s… you name it it’s all out everywhere, but the tree is where we all gather. We open gifts around it, and sit looking at the pretty lights while all is quiet with everyone tucked up in bed.
What do we see?  Western-20111117-00604

A green pine tree, fake or real, either way it’s a pine tree. As we all know, Pines are trees that stay green no matter the season. They are still green when all others have faded and withered for winter. Some would say the reason we use them is because it’s the only tree alive this time of year, or that the real trees bring a wonderful fragrance into the house, but this year the symbols are standing out, ringing out the True reason for the season.

While it is true that Jesus was not born on December 25th, we have set this day aside to remember His birth. We celebrate His arrival into the world He created and that His life was spent to save us all. There is much to celebrate in Him.

The Tree : a tree that LIVES all year every year, it doesn’t die. Very fitting to celebrate the life of Jesus that will never, can never, end! The fragrance of pine reminding that our prayers are like a sweet fragrance that comes before God in His House. I also found pines referenced in the book of Isaiah.

Is. 41:17-20 Israel assured of God’s Help
17When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. 18I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.
19I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together: 20That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

Is. 60:13 The future glory of Zion
13The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.

Topper:
Star – He is the Bright and Morning Star, He is the Guiding Star that led the Wise men and shepherds, and He still leads the willing today.
Angel – Angel of the Lord, Angels we have heard on high singing praises to Jesus.
Cross – the place He showed how high, how wide, how deep the Love of God is for us. It has also been referenced as a tree, but I’m thankful a tree that is ALIVE is used to celebrate His birth and life.
Lights: since I’m talking symbolic, let’s look at the meanings of the colors on the tree.
Blue – symbol of Heaven, communion
Red – anointing, wisdom, praying, suffering, sacrifice, sin, the blood of Christ
Green – prosperity, growth, life
Yellow – gift, marriage, family, honor, hope
White – Spirit of the Lord, Holy power, purity
Light is found so many times in scripture there was no way to fit it all in here, so I’ll point out: In Exodus God said “Let there be light”, He lights our path before us that we would not slip or fall, He shines the light of His countenance upon us. In Isaiah; Arise, shine for thy light is come… The Hope of the World shines today.

Ornaments: we sing O Come Let Us Adore You, and we bring our little treasures, our keepsakes of years gone by, memories, ornaments of life, to adore the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.

Bells: Exodus 28:35 – bells were used on the hem of Aaron’s robe, the only priest allowed into the Holy Place. Now, after Christ, we are, all who believe, allowed into the Holy Place (intimacy/relationship with God).

Skirt: In 1 Sam 15 it references a skirt as a mantle, in Ezekiel and Ruth a skirt was laid over someone to claim them as their own, in Jeremiah and Lamentations in our skirts reveal something about us. Skirts are a covering from God, which is God’s favor on us. In Nahum God removed the skirt from those He was against.
I like that the skirt is at the bottom, “the least of these” God blesses, the humble God favors. I got to thinking about the stand that the skirt covers; its job is our job. We are to display Christ, His life, our adoration of Him to the world. As we do that, we become one with Him, and His robe/skirt/mantel covers us. I was talking to a friend of mine about this and she thought of the stand as Roots. How our roots are to grow down deep into Christ. Without strong roots a tree will not stand for long. From the little I know of Mantels I would say they are worn by people deeply rooted and grounded in Christ. (I’ll throw a plug in here for a book “Own Your Mantle”, by Melissa Flores)

Wreaths: 2 Chronicles 4:13 – This is speaking again of the Temple being built to house the ark. It was to be built to exact specifications from God, which would be a shadow of the actual temple in Heaven. In this temple there were to be wreaths to cover the two pommels of the chapiters which were upon the pillars.

Christmas seems to be a shadow of the temple too. Oh Let Us Rejoice! God has given us all a season to be “in His Temple” through all the inspired symbols of Christmas.

How have you been noticing Him in the symbols of Christmas this year?

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
Thou tree most fair and lovely!
Oh Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
Thou tree most fair and lovely!
The sight of thee at Christmastide
Spreads hope and gladness far and wide
Oh Christmas tree, O Christmas tree
Thou tree most fair and lovely!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
Thou hast a wondrous message:
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
Thou hast a wondrous message:
Thou dost proclaim the Saviour’s birth
Good will to men and peace on earth
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
Thou hast a wondrous message

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
You stand in verdant beauty
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
You stand in verdant beauty
Your boughs are green in summer’s glow
And do not fade in winter’s snow
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
You stand in verdant beauty

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
How laden are your branches
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
Your presence here enhances
Your silver star does glisten bright
Reflecting all the candlelight
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
How laden are your branches

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree
You fill all hearts with gaiety
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree
You fill all hearts with gaiety
On Christmas Day you stand so tall
Affording joy to one and all
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree
You fill all hearts with gaiety
