Luke 1 & 2 – Birth of Jesus
John 12:46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
Luke 2:8-9 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
Matt.2:2 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east[b] and have come to worship him.”
I have this figurine that is the word NOEL with the manger scene inside the letter O, an LED light in the top of the O is the Star. The Light struck me while looking at it (last Christmas – honest, I haven’t pulled out the Christmas décor… yet :)) and I remembered the story of Jesus’ birth.
The light shining down on Joseph and Mary in the manger – their marriage was considered unclean by the people of that day. It was a scandal that Mary was pregnant before their marriage. I understand what they must have felt, the rejection. Yet God, in love and acceptance, shown his heavenly light down on that precious scene. God displayed it for all to see, because it was His plan, it was pure and lovely in God’s eyes, acceptable, righteous, good, favorable, and He loved them. He loved Mary to bestow the favor of carrying Jesus, he loved Joseph who thought not of his own understanding, but in all his ways acknowledged the Lord and followed God. Oh and sweet baby Jesus! God’s son born that night! What a Glorious joy!
That one night changed everything, ushering in the Light to the world, wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger. Our Salvation! Victory had entered our world! All of Heaven rejoiced and sang praises to God! Light is a major player in the description of His birth, Light of the World is one of His names, light is part of Him. It is a substance of Jesus!
Genesis – the beginning when God created light (Gen.1:3) He separated the light from the darkness and He is still doing it today.
Jesus lived, died, and rose again so that we would be free! FREE people! Seriously Free! No more bonds to religion, to sickness, or to sin. He’s not messing around with us, He’s serious about our freedom. He died for it. He came to this place, went through all He did for us, and rose again that we would not have to face separation from God, or life eternal in hell. He wants us in Heaven with him (“That where I am, you may be also”), but even now, here on this earth in our life we live at this very moment He wants us to be free. No more pain of the past, no more controlling addictions… Jesus said “It is finished”. He defeated all the powers of the enemy in this world, and offers us Light to live by.
Eph. 5:8 tells us that “You were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light”
All we have to do is ask Him into our lives.
